Stallings Island PE 2024-2025
8th Grade (1st Period): 7:30 - 8:25
2024-2025 SIMS PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH OVERVIEW
Welcome to Stallings Island Middle School! We believe students benefit physically, mentally, and socially from Physical Education. Students will focus on improving their personal level of physical fitness through a variety of strength training and cardiovascular exercises at school. Health curriculum will also be taught to students throughout the year.
We encourage and challenge students to:
Get out of their comfort zone and try new things
*students often find something new they enjoy and gain confidence to try new things in other areas of their life
Push themselves mentally and physically when things get tough
*lack of motivation, fatigued muscles, the desire to quit mentally
Elevate heart rate regularly to increase blood flow to the heart, lungs, and brain
*research shows this makes the heart and lungs stronger, as well as, allows the brain to better focus when students return to academics
Take personal responsibility for one’s own health
*we encourage students to stay active and to become conscious about the foods they eat as well as the amount of screen time they use daily

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS (MILE RUN)
Each 9-Week Grading Period, students will participate in 2-3 mile runs. The purpose of our Mile Run assessments are for students to not only self-monitor their own cardiovascular health and body strength, but also learn how to set goals and achieve consistency over the course of each school year.
Assessment days are based on timing, attendance, and weather.
MILE #1:
Baseline Run: Essentially this is a Pre-Test for the school year. This gives each student a baseline from which to improve. The grade earned for this first yearly assessment is based on effort, not time.
MILE #2 – (up to) MILE #12
Beginning on the 2nd Mile Run of the school year, a student’s grade is based on their own individual performance. The top runners don’t automatically make 100’s and the less strong make 70’s. The grade is based on their own individual consistency and improvement.
GRADING:
- If a child shows improvement Grade- 100
- If a child runs within 30 seconds of their previous attempt- Grade - 95
- If a child runs within 60 seconds of their previous attempt- Grade – 90
- If a child runs within 1:30 of their previous attempt- Grade- 85
- If a child runs within 2:00 of their previous attempt- Grade – 80
- If a child runs within 2:30 of their previous attempt- Grade- 75
- If a child runs within 3:00 of their previous attempt - Grade – 70
- If a child’s run exceeds more than 3:00 from their previous attempt- Grade – 60
- If a child gives little to no effort and willfully refuses- Grade – 40
- A retake is required for students exceeding 15 minutes
This system allows for a child to have a “bad day, bad run, adverse conditions, etc.” and still be successful
In most cases, students make gradual improvement through the course of the year and make 100’s on most if not all of their attempts
MILE RUNS will be run on the day their class runs if present (cannot choose to run on makeup day)
GRADING SCALE
Formative (40%) -
Daily Grade:
- Each “Daily Grade” is actually the sum of the previous 10 school days (10 days X 10 pts per day) = 100 possible points
A student's daily grade will represent the following areas:
-Tennis shoes are REQUIRED for class (No Crocs, boots, sandals, slides, etc.)
-Class Participation & Appropriate Effort
-Following Rules & Procedures
-Positive Attitude & Willingness to Try
-Cooperation & Flexibility
Summative (60%) -
Students will have 3 Physical Assessments in order to measure growth in physical abilities (strength, flexibility, cardiovascular, skills, etc.) Grades from Health lessons will also be calculated in the Summative Grade.
FIT GEORGIA (FORMERLY FITNESS GRAM)
The state of Georgia requires that each student participate in the FITGEORGIA. Students who take PE for a full year will take the assessment twice. This physical assessment measures height, weight, cardiovascular health (PACER Test), flexibility, and strength (push-ups and curl-ups). The results of these tests are entered and a report will be made available for parents to view through Parent Portal each semester. These assessments are not reflected in your child's grade. We do though, encourage them to do their best as this report is an indicator of their overall physical health.
